Governor Hochul enacted multiple protest restrictions including buffer zones around houses of worship and bans on protesters wearing masks. The latest sting of arrests of Capitol protesters resulted in misdemeanors, over the lesser charge of disorderly conduct.
New York has seen increased protests outside religious institutions and other venues, prompting calls for stronger regulations to protect public access and safety. Hochul said she had nothing to do with sit-in protesters at the Capitol in Albany being hit with misdemeanor charges, rather than the lesser and more common disorderly conduct charges, but defended her criminalization of protests in buffer zones and use of masks.
